Disclaimer: I hate this gym with a passion, already.
I got this email at work today:

(edited to say - I got this email at work today from a coworker. That's the source. Not me. Just passing the word along. I think having the lj cut confused the issue. it's not me)
REEDITED TO SAY - for those of you who think this is a rumor - this is the woman's blog
http://blog.myspace.com/thefabulous dena
24 Hour Fitness is a national corporate chain, I spoke with corporate
head quarters about the lack of security for women members and to
report my situation. They refuse to change their policies or hire
security. Get the word out for women to know how they stand with this
multimillion dollar company who'll take your money, but doesn't care
about your safety - it ain't cost effective lady, sorry.
I encountered a sexual predator last night May 17th, 12am at the 24
Hour Fitness at Hancock Center. It happened in the pool area. I told
the man at the front desk right after the incident, but he let him
walk out without reprimanding or identifying him, and did not contact
the police or inform his manager. I contacted the police today. I
spoke to the Assistant manager of Hancock Center 24 Hour Fitness today
at 1pm and was told there was no record of the incident whatsoever.
Later I spoke to the Hancock Center General Manager today, Alexander
Bruce, at 2pm. He told me they had no plans to ensure safety for women
members; there would be nothing in place to prevent this happening to
me or any other member again.
He also said he would not drain the whirlpool in which the pervert
performed his lewd act, stating that "the chlorine in the whirl pool
is strong enough to kill sperm and the HIV Virus. We will not be
draining it." So if you soaked in the whirlpool today, there was more
than just you, the water and chlorine swirling around in
there....which is enough to make me sick and never go back.
The district manager Becky Most admitted that the problems with sexual
predators is an "ongoing problem at this location." If you work out
here, you need to know this to protect yourself, because the club has
no intention of doing so. Becky Most said "It's a public club, we
can't be everywhere at once. Swim at your own risk." It is not a
public club, I paid a hefty initiation fee in addition to a monthly
fee, which I thought was access to the clubs without harassment.
Becky Most also showed no remorse, no sympathy or apologies,; she was
hostile and rude, raising her voice and speaking over me.
In short, 24 Hour Fitness Center blames the victim for what happens in
their private facility, instead of themselves for letting perverts
come and go without reprimand.
After personally reviewing the security tapes of my incident, District
Manager Becky Most admitted that no one actually watches the cameras;
I could have been killed and no one would have noticed.
District manager Becky Most of multimillion dollar corporation 24 Hour
Fitness Center said they will not be hiring anyone to walk around and
make sure it's members aren't being violated, even at night when they
have just one employee working the front desk, even though it keeps
happening.
Paying someone $8 to walk around and make sure you're not being gang
raped in the steam room is not cost efficient, nor their company
policy.
I don't want this to happen to anyone else, especially since it's an
"ongoing problem." The incident happened near the daycare center
within the club; it could be a little kid next time. Becky Most
informed me that the last incident did happen during the day.
To voice your opinion to 24 Hour Fitness Center about their policy of
ignoring women's safety and welcoming sexual predators into their
facilities, even after they've committed lewd sexual crimes, call

Also, I would call the local Health Inspector about the pool condition. I'd love to see them get the results of a water sample.
ewwww
ewwww
Sue.
I'm sure some sleazeball lawyer'll take up the case.
In the meantime, go here.
> It didn't happen to me. I was sent this email at work today.
So it's an unconfirmed, internet-disseminated rumor with no evidence to back it up, and you're passing it on? How do you know it's not a disgruntled former employee, or someone from a competing gym, or just some perv making it up, or any of a thousand other things?
I also put in the disclaimer that I hate this gym.
So any bad things I hear about them, I'm going to share.
1) I agree completely that they should have done something in regard to this predator. 24 Hour Fitness should have called the police for you and later on refunded/revoked his membership. To not do this is down right negligent.
2) While technically, yeah, the chlorine is going to kill and "biologicals", it's only water. It doesn't cost much to drain and refill a whirlpool; especially in light of the negative publicity not draining it is going to cause.
3) As far as security goes, most clubs do not have such security (certainly no gym that I have used). Given that most clubs are trying to keep their costs down it is unlikely that they will in the future. Additionally, most security guards that you could hire would for $8 an hour would likely only be allowed to call the police due to liability issues.
4) Something to remember, while we are in no way responsible for other's behavior, we are ultimately responsible for our own security and safety. Police, security, etc are generally only good after the fact. Even if there had been security had been on the premises, such a predator would simply wait until security was in another area of the building and then commit their crime of choice. Having your own strategies in place to handle such people can go a long way.
5) At this point, you need to call the police and make a report yourself. If nothing is done, the predator is going to continue (and likely escalate in their behavior). Please, make a police report on this, both for yourself and for anyone else who may cross this person's path.
6) You should also contact "7 on your side" or other mass media since you are not going to get any action from 24 Hour Fitness. It would also help to warn the rest of the public about this guy. Who know, maybe someone else may come forward to corroborate your story and both get this guy off the streets and improve the whole gym security situation. (remember the whole dressing room camera thing a year or two ago).
Bottom line: Posting to LJ, good, getting this to the police and the media, even better.
I am sorry you had to deal with this. I hope this perp gets all that is deserved.
And - if it was me, I would have kicked his ass. But I'm crazy like that.
I manage apartment complexes and while I care about my resident's safety, hiring security puts us in a really terrible position. By providing *any* security, we imply *total* security. So if we hire a guard to walk around -- which is $40 per guard per hour, by the way -- we become liable for anything that happens where the guard doesn't happen to be at the moment. If we don't provide a guard, on the other hand, then we generally don't have liability for matters of personal safety.
It's really messed up, but I'm sure that is at least one of the reasons that gyms don't provide such security. There *are* people out there who make a living gaming the liability system -- they know where the "gotchas" are and seek them out.
I go to hancock center 24 almost everyday and have never run into a problem. the staff is nice to me and alexander is a friend of mine. you never explained what actually happened. just hinted he ejaculated in the whirlpool. i've encountered some weird people, but hell, you face that every day walking down a street. they made a good point.
It's the Internet, after all. It's not like this would be the first time someone has told a very enraging (and yet completely untrue) story simply to get a response. I'm not sure I would put enough trust in the "friend of a friend of a friend" chain to jump right down someone's throat - no pun intended - without doing a little more research.
It just seems a little odd to me that the victim of such a heinous sexual assalt would be so willing to broadcast a detailed account of the people that she spoke to regarding her allegations, but not the actual allegation itself. That's not to say that it isn't the right thing to do, just that it's not common for a sexual assault victim to want to talk about it right away. And lastly, we don't really know what constitutes sexual assault in the victims mind. Yes, his behavior might have been lewd, indecent, and otherwise disgusting, but was it assault? Shouldn't that be a matter for a court to decide? And yes, I realize that that is not a possibility because of the fact that, according to the woman's allegation, no one on staff bothered to question him.
I agree with the ex-employee angle, but at the most, it sounds like some guy was wacking off in the hot tub. While extremely gross to think about, its a far cry from gang rape in the steamroom.
