Mechanic to avoid

No, not the guy I'm always chatting up as the best thing since sliced bread and automatic transmissions.

Rather, a rant about the Firestone store near Northcross Mall.  When I started taking my truck there after it went out of warranty they were pretty good.  Then the management changed, and it changed again, and now there seems to be BE no store manager.

I have for several years been using the Firestone store located at 7806 Northcross Dr, Austin, TX for my tire care and alignment needs.  I purchased a "lifetime alignment warranty" approximately two years ago.  I have my alignment checked every six months, give or take.

In hte past I have also used Firestone for mechanic services, including hose replacement and state inspection.

My three most recent visits to this store left a bad taste in my mouth and they have lost my business permanently.

In approximately January of this year I took my vehicle in to have a fluid leak diagnosed. The problem was a broken hose.  I gave the "customer service" person the go-ahead to repair the problem.  Six hours later, and after several repeat phone calls, repeat trips to and from the parts place, and several incorrect parts, the hose was repaired and I was on my way.  The whole Keystone Kops routine with finding the part was ludicrous and unprofessional.

But I persisted in expecting Firestone to provide me with quality car care (that *is* the motto, right?).

Not so.

In May of this year I took my vehicle in for an alignment check and a state inspection.  Two days later when I was several hundred miles away I discovered that my gas cap was missing.  I phoned the store and advised them of the problem, and indicated that I expected Firestone to replace my gas cap - it was, after all, where it was supposed to be during the state inspection or my vehicle would have failed inspection.  After much argument on the part of the "customer service" person I was told they would "try to find a gas cap" and to bring the truck in.

Choosing instead to cut my losses I went to a national auto parts chain and bought a locking gas cap.

Strike two.

Yesterday, 9/24, I took my vehicle to the same Firestone store for an alignment check, rotation and balance.  I was told to expect to spend 30-45 minutes waiting.  Two hours later my vehicle finally rolled out of the garage.  While it was in the garage the "tech" apparently found nails in my tires - a fact of which I was not apprised but instead learned when another customer asked for a time estimate for the work on his car; the "customer service" technician told that customer the tire tech "had to fix two flats on that Explorer (mine!)" and would then be finished and able to work on the other customer's vehicle.

Further, after I left with my theoretically aligned vehicle and went about my daily rounds I discovered that not only is the vehicle NOT aligned, the alignment is in fact WORSE than it was when I took it in yesterday.

This morning I presented my vehicle at the shop at 0830 and advised the "customer service" person that the alignment is worse, that I have no time to wait on the thing as I have an appointment at 10am and that I would appreciate it if they'd get it on the rack ASAP to fix the problem.  I was told the *only* thing they could do for me is to put me in the queue.

This is unacceptable and has permanently lost Firestone a customer.  After waiting two hours I expected my vehicle to be perfectly aligned and it is not.  At the very least my vehicle should have been moved to the front of the queue.

So goodbye, Firestone.  I figure I've gotten my money out of the "lifetime alignment" and I'll be going elsewhere from now on.  Every time y'all touch my vehicle it comes out worse for the experience and I'm finished with you.

This is particularly sad, because I've been a stalwart Firestone tires customer despite all the problems with exploding tires on Ford Explorers (and I had those tires OEM on my vehicle when I bought it new).  I've had two new sets of Firestones on the vehicle but I'll be shopping Goodyear for the next set.

I've had horrid customer service and similar issues with the Firestone near 183 & Ohlen. I ended up talking to the VP of Firestone and still didn't manage to get it resolved. Pretty sad.

I think all the Firestone stores in the area are owned by a single franchisee. The text behind the cut is the text of the complaint I sent to Firestone corporate this morning. I don't expect anything to come of it but I'm on the record as being disgruntled.

Anybody want a 10% off tires coupon? It came in yesterday's mail, ironically.

I have been there too...
I got completely screwed by them - I took my car over for a check engine light, and they replaced my oxygen sensor. They charged me like $700 for what a guy told me he could have done for $50. And then the light just came back on 3 days later. It was ridiculous.

That Firestone has had shitty customer service since last year at least. I had several occasions where it took them SIX HOURS to fix my flat (nails each time). And it's not like they had a parking lot full of cars either. I used to work across the street and would watch as employees would leave randomly and show back up with beer during work hours.

I went over there after my last bad experience and asked for the number to Corporate. The asshole gave me the number to a phone sex line. I hopped online, contacted Firestone, and told them that I would be taking my business elsewhere and telling everyone I knew to do the same.

I'm sorry that you had a craptacular experience. Hopefully that particular store gets shut down.

from what i understand, some of firestone puts their employees through a car school and the employee is then contracted to pay them back out of their check for which they are contracted to stay with the company for a certain amount of time. this is probably why things don't get done well, the co doesn't want to lose the $ they spent on the people they educated.

its sad that he gave a phone sex #!
i woulda bitched 10fold!

I went to the Firestone on Parmer & Mopac a couple of years ago for a state inspection that took about an hour and a half. Afterwards, they tried to convince me I needed four new tires, all of which would cost me a lot. I asked what the state inspection limit was and what my number was. I don't remember the details exactly, but I basically didn't need my tires changed for about another year. Naturally, I never went back.

For future reference, the 10-Minute Sticker Stop on Burnet a few blocks north of 183 is great for state inspections. Discount Tires is fabulous for tires; I got 4 new tires in an hour. They gave me the next level up for free because they didn't have the cheaper ones in stock. [begin embarrassing story] They were good enough that when I, being a bonehead, _wayyyyyy_ over-inflated one of mine (to almost double the pressure), it still held up for about 8 months and is still going, although I should quit being a bonehead and replace it. [/end embarrassing story]

If you search in this community, you'll find posts commending both places for efficiency, quality, and great customer service.

My now-recent-ex b/f has the lifetime alignments on all of his cars through Firestone. I don't think he's ever taken any of them there and had the alignment come out right the first time. It's something he's learned to expect and lives with.

What he did not expect or learn to live with was that one of his cars was abused while it was in their care. He's meticulous to the point of obsession in the care of his cars, so there are no standing starts (clutch dump, wheels spinning, etc), no stupidity with his cars, especially the one in question (Lotus Elise, still under warranty). When he had a problem with the Lotus, he took it to the dealer, where they downloaded the computer and found FOUR standing starts in it in the last few days, which encompassed the day the Elise was at Firestone for the alignment, so it's apparent that the nitwits who worked there took his car for a joyride. He approached the manager of the Firestone about it, but I'm not sure what the outcome was. Thankfully Lotus didn't void his warranty over it, though they were certainly within their rights if they had wanted to.

reminds me of this story where this guy took his elise to a goodyear to get the oil changed. the guy showed the tech the exact page in the manual where the jack points are supposed to be but the tech ignored it. once the tech got the car up on the lift, it fell off and completely fucked up the aluminum frame.

My first thought there was, if he really cared about his LOTUS, he wouldn't have taken it to firestone in the first place! :)

That said, it's not just the north side shop. I've had two experiences with the one at I-35 and Stassney now, and both times they "found major problems" that simply didn't exist. The first time it was for tires, and they "discovered" that my break pads and calipers were shot. (despite being only 6 months old) A trip to another mechanic yielded no problems at all. The second trip, they "discovered" the rear struts were leaking and in need of immediate replacement. They were less than a year/6,000 miles old, and again checked out just fine at another shop.

Discount Tires
I've had fantastic customer service at Discount Tire. Really above and beyond.

I found out an interesting thing about them when I was there recently.

A guy came in to ask about applying for a manager's position.

The customer service guy behind the desk (one of the mechanics; I don't think they have any desk staff) said that they didn't have any.

The potential applicant asked if the desk guy thought one would open up soon.

The desk guy replied that they never have management positions open; they only promote from the within!

I thought that was pretty cool since the mechanics are the guys who really know what is going on in terms of the work.

My experience with Firestone up north was completely satisfactory. More fool I for thinking I'd get the same sort of service here.

The first time I took my vehicle to the Northcross Firestone I had no problems whatsoever. The manager was competent, the techs were competent, price was reasonable and the work was done correctly.

But yeah, I'm done with Firestone. Honestly the only thing I was going to let them do is the alignments because I have a good mechanic now, but they screwed themselves on that score too.

Ah well, live and learn.

yeah, even back home in mississippi, we know not to use firestone. you go in for an oil change and they "find" tons of things wrong and their labor rates aren't very good.

I don't think it's just Austin. I ended up in a nose-to-nose screaming match with a Firestone manager in Missouri who insisted that my three-year-old car with forty thousand miles on it needed new front and rear brakes, new rotors, and a new rear caliper, then refused to take my car off the rack until I'd paid him fifty dollars cash for the 'free' estimate and signed a waiver saying I absolved them of any damages done to my car.

After I moved down here, my boyfriend took his Jeep in to the Firestone at William Cannon and Brodie for a fuel pump and a new clutch (he had a coupon and wanted to get the service done before a road trip, and his regular mechanic was crazy busy). When he got it back, the fuel tank was empty, so he headed over to the gas station. On the way, he noticed that the car was in four-wheel drive and he couldn't get it out. He decided to fill up and then take it right back. Imagine his surprise when gasoline started splashing out onto the ground. They hadn't reconnected the gas tank properly. He took it straight back and they 'fixed' it. His Jeep would only do regular and four-wheel high, no four-wheel low. He decided to live with that until he could get it to another mechanic.

They have a really bad reputation nationally for ripping women off whenever they can get away with it. Nobody who calls me 'girly' gets to look under my hood, frankly.

I lived in Illinois before I came to Austin (no bitching from the "go home Yankees" crowd - I married a Texan and I've birthed one too, this is home now *grin*). The Firestone I used up there was excellent - while-you-wait service, one price list, no dicking around. The vehicle I'm no longer taking to Firestone here went to the dealer for as much as possible while it was under warranty. I had a bad experience with NTB finding "problems" when I knew better - don't try to skunk a mechanic's granddaughter - so I switched to Firestone. Maybe it's a "southern Firestone" problem?

I love my indy mechanic and I recommend him highly. Unfortunately he doesn't have an alignment machine.
