my friend told me the city of round rock has free mulch you can come and pick up. Does any one know if there is anything like that here in Austin?
Thanks

I'm unsure if there is anything like what Round Rock offers but you can get free mulch in Austin. Davey tree service and other tree trimming services have to pay to dump mulch and if they can leave it at your house, it helps them...and you.

It's a mix though I find it's usually hardwood and cedar. It's roughly shredded but is wonderful for pathways. Being larger chunks it's not as attractive as twice shredded stuff you can buy but it's free and you can get oh...8 yards delivered for nothing.

Make sure to have a large wheelbarrow, a pitchfork and a strong back. They'll drop it in your driveway.

You can't select when they will drop it off but if you write them at least once a week and you're polite, persisltent and patient. You'll get all the mulch you'll ever need.

Write them an email and give them your address and contact information.

Thanks for the tip. I emailed them and he said they had to start charging - min $250 for 12 yards!!

No way! The tree services have to pay to dump the stuff I'm told. I'm surprised to hear that they are now charging since it was simpler and easier for them to keep names/numbers on file and drop the mulch closest to where they were trimming.

Call around. Free mulch can be had.

Davey isn't the only tree service in town. Asplundh.

Worst comes to worst. Try going to 2007 Bert Ave. Last time I was there the mulch pile was at least 24 yards and they'd probably just let you have some.
