i was asked to do this...

i watched the whole Prologue (sp?) today. it was an ITT, which is cool. and since it was only 8.2km's, the cyclists went balls out. yeah, the winning time was 9'23" by christophe moreau...fast as shit! it was like 52km/hr...that's incredible to keep that kind of pace up for 9 and a half mins...Lance ended up 3rd, which is a good spot it seems...he doesn't have to deal with wearing the yellow jersey right away...Jan Ullrich finished right behind Lance, and he's supposed to be Lance's main competitor. it's weird...Lance is the best climber, sprinter, and has the balls to win, again. isn't that weird to have all 3 in one person? especially a person that 4yrs ago was recovering from cancer...

first two are kinda sketchy...sorry...did it from memory...

Stage 1....
...was won by Erik Zabel. it was cool...there was a break away after 55km and it lasted up until like 30km. then as the 2 leaders were absorbed by the peleton, it became a giant mass of 185 cyclists...neato. at the end, Erik came out ahead. overall, Christophe Moreou (sp?) is still the leader and Lance is 3 seconds behind. some guy for one of the many Mapei teams went down hard...i think he might've broken his collar bone...sucks for him...more later...

ok, better update about stage 1:

FDJ's Jacky Durand goes off the front solo at 55 km...this is classic JD, but it just gets better. Only one rider goes after him (mainly because his escapes almost never succeed), Christophe Oriol, and he catches him when Jacky has to well, pee. So the two press on together, only to be stopped by a train! What do they do? Sign autographs while they wait it out... (The pack had to wait a compensary time as well).
And, as fate would have it, the pack catches them 11.5 km before the line and the sprinters set up to have their day - but not before JD grabs the 2 "climb" bonuses and the Polka Dot jersey for 2 days...As the peloton got within 1km to the finish, Laurent Jalabert tries to steal the thunder from the disorganized bunch and was clear as they came under the 1000m banner. But the pack would have none of it and ramped it up to swallow him 400m later. With no clear team lead outs occuring, it was everyone for themselves and as 4 riders worked hard on the left, Erik Zabel launched solo on the right to take his 9th stage win by a bike length - and don his hallowed Green Jersey. LA finished 49th in the pack and at the same time as the bunch. So overall it looks like this...
Christophe Moreau wearing yellow...
Igor Gonzalez Galdeano 3 seconds back in second...
Lance 4 seconds back in third....
Jan Ullrich is 7 seconds behind in fifth...

i can't find the results of the rest of USPS...sorry. i'll look tomorrow....

Casualties of the day: Mapei leader Daniele Nardello, crashed and lost 12 minutes, & Lotto's Fabien De Waele, no start from a Prologue crash. One other guy on team Cofidis, I think, crashed in the last turn of the Prologue, but he did ride. ah, David Millar was his name. hope this will suffice (sp?)
