December 13th, 2001

a message from the NOWAR collective:

----------

On Thursday December 13, at 8:00 pm, there will be a film screening at Jo's Coffee House to benefit RAWA. Jo's is located at 1316 South Congress (right across from Continental Club). RAWA is the oldest women's humanitarian and political organization in Afghanistan, founded in 1977. RAWA struggles for peace, freedom, democracy, and women's rights in Afghanistan. They provide basic education to women (outlawed in 1996), and provide needed medical attention for refugees and orphans. Austin Women in Support of RAWA will show 2 short movies: Hidden Faces--about Egyptian women's life in Muslim society, and My Heart is My Witness--an investigation of the status of women in Islam from Mali, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. The event is free, but donations are strongly encouraged. Please come and bring a donation for RAWA, or become a sponsor of the next film screening (Behind the Veil) at the Alamo drafthouse by contributing $100.

On Friday, December 14, at 5:30 pm, there will be a demonstration against any attempt to widen the war. There are plans being discussed to attack Iraq, Somalia, and other countries, and there is a war on civil liberties in this country as well. Please come out to the State Capitol, 11th & Congress.
