Question

I've been in Austin for 10 years now, and I've lived all over the city. Currently, I'm living North. I didn't want to move here as a former South Austinite — all you ever hear is that it's completely lame. But I have to say... I like it a lot. I don't think it's lame. I don't think the people are jerks. I don't think it has any more strip malls/chains than South Austin does. It takes me less than 15 minutes to get downtown.

So, I'm curious. Why all the hate for North Austin? I love this city, and I know a lot of us here are very proud of it, so why hate an entire cardinal direction of it? I think there are great things in every part of Austin, and there are also bad things in every part of Austin. Which leads me to also wonder...

Why do we generalize the city into 4 areas (n,s,e,w)? Why not be specific and use neighborhoods? For example, there's a huge difference between Allandale and Rundberg, yet both are considered North. Same goes for William Cannon/Brodie vs. Mary/S. 1st.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.
